Circular needle size 10 mm (60-80 cm) if required stitch holder
Tension:
9 sts and 14 rows to 10 cm, over stocking stitch on 10 mm needles or the size required to give the correct tension.
Check your tension – if less stitches use thinner needles, if more use thicker needles.
Please note: This cardigan is knitted in one piece, starting with the back. When sts become too numerous change to a circular needle if required.
Back
Using 10 mm needles and thumb method cast on 53 (63) sts.
1st row. * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1.
2nd row. p1, * k1, p1, rep from * to end.
These 2 rows set 1x1 rib. Work 3 rows more in 1x1 rib.
6th row. Rib to end, inc 1 st in centre of row. 54 (64) sts. Proceed as follows:
1st row. Knit.
2nd row. Purl.
These 2 rows set st-st (stocking stitch).
Working in st-st (throughout) cont until work measures 53 cm, ending with a WS row.
Shape sleeves
Cast on 30 sts at end of next 2 rows. 114 (124) sts. Proceed as follows: 1st row. (k1, p1) 3 times, knit to last 6 sts, (p1, k1) 3 times.
2nd row. (p1, k1) 3 times, purl to last 6 sts, (k1, p1) 3 times.
1st and 2nd rows set st-st with sleeve borders.
Keeping continuity of st-st with sleeve borders cont until work measures 22 (24) cm, from last cast on sts, ending with a WS row (shoulder point).
Divide for fronts
Next row. (k1, p1) 3 times, k45 (50), (p1, k1) 3 times, turn and leave rem 57 (62) sts on a stitch holder. Working on these 57 (62) sts only proceed as follows for right front: Next row. (p1, k1) 3 times, patt to end.
Next row. Patt to last 6 sts, (p1, k1)
3 times.
Last 2 rows set patt with front border.
Keeping continuity of patt with front border as set (throughout) cont until work measures 22 (24) cm, from shoulder, ending with a WS row. Next row. Cast off 30 sts, patt to end. 27 (32) sts. Cont without shaping until work measures same as back from shoulder to top of rib, ending with a RS row.
Next row. Patt to end, dec 1 st in center of row for 2nd size only. 27 (31) sts.
Commencing with 1st row of 1x1 rib work 6 rows.
Cast off in rib.
With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem 57 (62) sts left on a stitch holder and proceed as follows for left front: Next row. (k1, p1) 3 times, patt to end.
Next row. Patt to last 6 sts, (k1, p1)
3 times.
Last 2 rows set patt with front border.
Keeping continuity of patt with front border as set (throughout) cont until work measures 22 (24) cm, from shoulder, ending with a RS row. Next row. Cast off 30 sts, patt to end. 27 (32) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures same as back from shoulder to top of rib, ending with a RS row.
Next row. Patt to end, dec 1 st in center of row for 2nd size only. 27 (31) sts.
Commencing with 1st row of 1x1 rib work 6 rows.
Cast off in rib.
Finishing
Join side and sleeve seams. Block out garment to the measurements given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.
