Lace pattern and stockinette stitch: 30 sts and 42 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Basic pattern: Stockinette stitch: In rows: RS: knit, WS: purl. In rounds: Knit all st.

Garter stitch: RS and WS: knit all st.

Lace pattern: Work according to the pattern chart in rnds.

All rounds are shown in the chart; always read the chart from right to left.

Repeat the 12 st of the pattern to the end.

For the leg shaft, work rnds 1–9 once, then repeat rounds 2-9 throughout.

Note: In every 9th rnd, k the first st and only cross it over the last st on needle 4 at the end of the Rnd.

Note: Chart on next page.

Abbreviation:

Slip 1, k1, psso (skp): slip 1 st as if to knit, k1, then pass the slipped st over the knitted st.

When only one figure is given, it applies for all sizes.

Cast on 60 (72) st and divide over 4 double pointed needles (= 15 (18) st per needle), join to work in the round, and work in lace pattern. When the leg shaft measures 12 cm, work a cap heel in stockinette st over the 30 (36) st on needles 1 and 4 for 26 (30) r. In the first r, k2tog, evenly spaced, 2x (4x); work the 2 first and the 2 last st in garter st = 28 (32) heel st.

For the 3-part heel cap, divide the st into 3 sections = 9 (10) st each for the outer sections and 10 (12) st for the heel cap.

In the following RS row, work up to the last heel cap st. * Work the last heel cap st together with the following st in the outer section as skp: slip the last cap st as if to knit, k the next outside st, then pass the slipped st over the knitted st and turn your work.

Slip the first heel cap st as if to purl (with the yarn in front of your work), then p all st up to the last heel cap st. Purl the last st together with the following st from the outer section and turn your work. Slip the first heel cap st purlwise with the yarn behind your work, then k all heel cap st up to the last st. Repeat these decreases from * until all the stitches from the outer sections have been worked and only the cap stitches remain.

Continue working in rnds, working the st on needles 1 and 4 in stockinette st and the st on needles 2 and 3 in the lace pattern.

In the first rnd, pick up 13 (15) st from each edge of the heel flap and pick up one st each from the horizontal bars between needles 1 and 2 and needles 3 and 4 = 19 (22) st each on needles 1 and 4. For the gusset, in every 3rd rnd, k the second-to-last and third-to-last st on needle 1 together, 5x (6x), k the last st; on needle 4, k the first st, work the 2nd and 3rd st together as skp = 14 (16) st each on needles 1 and 4. When the foot measures 18 (21) cm, k 1 rnd, knitting 2 st together, evenly spaced, 2x (4x) each on needles 2 and 3 = 14 (16) on each needle.

For the toe shaping work in stockinette st in rnds. On needles 1 and 3, work to 3 stitches before the end of the needle; then knit two stitches together and knit the last stitch. On needles 2 and 4, knit the first stitch, then work the next two stitches as skp.

Repeat these decreases on every round until only 8 stitches remain. Thread a double strand of yarn through the remaining 8 st and pull snugly.

Total foot length: 22 (26,5) cm. Work both socks in the same way.
