MONSTER JUMPER

Notes Use the intarsia technique when working the Chart (working with separate small balls for sections of colour and twisting yarns to prevent holes).

This sweater has a nice close-fitting neck, be careful not to cast off too tightly. I highly recommend using Elizabeth Zimmerman’s sewn cast off: www.knitty.com/ISSUEsumme­r06/FEATsum06T­T.html

BACK

Cast on 72 (76: 84: 88: 92) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A. Row 1 (RS) *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS) *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

These 2 rows form rib. Rib a further 9 (11: 13: 15: 15) rows, ending after a RS row.

Next row (WS) Purl.

Change to 4mm needles and Yarn B.

Rows 1 to 6 Using Yarn B and starting with a knit row, work 6 rows in st st.

Rows 7 to 12 Using Yarn A, work 6 rows in st st.

These 12 rows form stripe patt and are repeated throughout.**

Patt until Back meas 23 (25.5: 30: 32: 34.5)cm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

[66 (68: 74: 76: 80) sts]

Cont in patt until Back meas 35.5 (39.5: 45: 49: 53)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a RS row.

Next row (WS) P17 (17: 19: 18: 20), PM, P32 (34: 36: 40: 40), PM, P17 (17: 19: 18: 20). Cast off, keeping markers in place to mark shoulders.

POCKET

Cast on 30 sts using 4mm needles and Yarn C.

Starting with a knit row, work in st st until Pocket meas 8 (9: 11: 13: 15)cm from cast on, ending after a WS row.

Place sts on a holder.

FRONT

Work as Back to **.

Cont in patt until Front meas 12 (15: 19.5: 22.5: 25.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

MOUTH OPENING

Cont in stripe patt.

Next row (RS) K21 (23: 27: 29: 31), place next 30 sts on hold at front of work, with RS facing K30 Pocket sts from holder, then knit to end of row of front.

This places 30 sts on hold at front of work with Pocket knitted in behind. Next row (WS) Purl.

Work a further 6 rows, ending after a WS row.

SET CHART

Cont in stripe patt throughout and as background of Chart.

Row 1 (RS) K16 (18: 22: 24: 26), work Row 1 from Chart, K16 (18: 22: 24: 26).

Row 2 (WS) P16 (18: 22: 24: 26), work Row 2 from Chart, P16 (18: 22: 24: 26).

These 2 rows set position of Chart.

Cont in patt until Front meas 23 (25.5: 30: 32: 34.5)cm.

SHAPE ARMHOLES

Cont Chart and stripe patt.

Cast off 3 (4: 5: 6: 6) sts at beg of next 2 rows.

[66 (68: 74: 76: 82) sts]

Patt until Chart is complete, then cont in only stripe patt as set until Front meas 28 (32: 37.5: 41.5: 45.5)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

SHAPE LEFT NECK

Cont in stripe patt as set throughout.

Next row (RS) K28 (28: 31: 31: 33), turn and cont on these sts for left side neck and leave rem 38 (40: 43: 45: 47) sts on a st holder.

***Next row (WS) Purl.

Dec 1 st at neck edge on next row and the foll 4 (4: 5: 5: 5) rows, then on next RS row and foll 5 (5: 5: 6: 6) alt rows.

[17 (17: 19: 18: 20) sts]

Cont in patt until work meas 35.5 (39.5: 45: 49: 53)cm, ending after a WS row.

Cast off.

SHAPE RIGHT NECK

Cont in stripe patt as set throughout.

With RS facing, slip 10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts onto a st holder for

neckband, rejoin yarn to rem sts and knit to end. [28 (28: 31: 31: 33) sts]

Next row P to end.

Complete as for left side neck from ***.

SLEEVES

Cast on 40 (44: 48: 52: 56) sts using 3.25mm needles and Yarn A. Rib 11 (13: 15: 17: 17) rows in K2, P2 ribbing as for Back, ending after a RS row.

Next row (WS) Purl.

Change to 4mm needles and Yarn B. Starting with a knit row, work 2 rows in st st. SHAPE SLEEVES

Cont in Yarn B and st st throughout, inc 1 st at each end of next row and 2 (3: 0: 4: 4) foll 6th rows, then on 5 (5: 8: 7: 8) foll 8th rows. [56 (62: 66: 76: 82) sts]

Cont straight in st st until Sleeve meas 31.5 (33.5: 37: 41: 45)cm from cast-on edge, ending after a WS row.

Cast off.

MAKING UP

Join right shoulder seam. NECKBAND

With RS facing and using Yarn A and 3.25mm circular needle, 40cm long, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts down left front neck, K10 (12: 12: 14: 14) sts from Front holder, pick up and knit 23 (23: 24: 23: 23) sts up right front neck, and 32 (34: 36: 40: 40) along Back cast-off edge. [88 (92: 96: 100: 100) sts]

Row 1 (WS) *P2, K2; rep from * to end.

Row 2 (RS) *P2, K2; rep from * to end.

These 2 rows form rib.

Rib a further 6 (6: 6: 8: 10) rows.

Cast off using a stretchy method. POCKET EDGING

With RS facing, slip held Front sts onto 3.25mm needles and join Yarn B.

Rows 1 to 3 Purl. Cast off purlwise.

FINISHING

Stitch the pocket to WS of Front, taking care not to twist Front out of shape. Using the photograph as a guide, work running stitch with Yarn A around inside edge of each eye. Sew on buttons for pupils.

Join left shoulder and neckband seams. Lining up centre of sleeve cast-off edge to shoulder seam, sew in sleeves. Join side and sleeve seams. Weave in ends. Block gently to measuremen­ts, following any yarn care instructio­ns on the ball band.
