Double seed stitch (odd number of stitches)

Row 1: * k1, p1 *, repeat from * to *, last stitch: k1.

Row 2: p1, * k1, p1 *, repeat from * to *.

Row 3: * p1, k1 *, repeat from * to *, last stitch: p1.

Row 4: k1, * p1, k1 *, repeat from * to *.

Repeat rows 1-4.

Left front

Using needles size 4 mm, cast on 59 (62) 65 (68) 71 sts and then work 3 rows of garter stitch.

Next WS row: k7 (7) 7 (9) 8, increase (inc) 1 (= pick up loop before next st, knit through back loop), [k11 (12) 10 (10) 11, inc 1] 4 (4) 5 (5) 5 times, k8 (7) 8 (9) 8 = 64 (67) 71 (74) 77 sts. Switch to needles size 5 mm and subdivide your work on the next row as follows: 62 (65) 69 (72) 75 sts in cable pattern (follow chart), 2 sts in garter stitch. Continue with sts divided as described above. Neck edge shaping: When the work measures 15 (15) 15 (16) 17 cm, cast off 1 st on alternate rows 7 (6) 6 (5) 2 times and then on every 4th row 17 (18) 19 (20) 22 times.

Shoulder shaping: At the same time, when the work measures 38 (39) 40 (42) 44 cm, cast off 1 st in next and then every 4th row 3 times in all, then in alternate rows 6 times in all, then in alternate rows, cast off 10 (11) 12 (13) 14 sts twice. Cast off the remaining 11 (12) 13 (14) 16 sts. Follow pattern chart all the time.

Right front

Work as left front but reverse the shaping.

Back

Using needles size 4 mm, cast on 107 (113) 119 (125) 131 sts and work 3 rows of garter stitch.

Next WS row: k9 (8) 9 (12) 10, inc 1, [k11 (12) 10 (10) 11, inc 1] 8 (8) 10 (10) 10 times, k19 (9) 10 (13) 11 = 116 (122) 130 (136) 142 sts. Switch to needles size 5 mm and work cable pattern.

Shape shoulder at same measurement and in the same way as on the fronts. Cast off rem 36 (36) 38 (36) 38 sts. Follow pattern chart all the time.

Shawl collar

Right side

Using needles size 5 mm, cast on 1 st and work double seed stitch with edging as follows:

Row 1: Inc 1 in same st = 2 sts.

Row 2: k1, inc 1 in next st = 3 sts.

Row 3: Inc 1 in first st, k2 = 4 sts.

Row 4: K3, p1.

Row 5: Inc 1 in first st, k3 = 5 sts.

Row 6: k2, p1, k1, p1.

Row 7: Inc 1 in first st, k1, p1, k2 = 6 sts.

Row 8: k2, (k1, p1) twice. Continue in this way, working in double seed stitch with 2 sts of garter stitch at the edge.

Inc 1 in first st of next row and then in alternate rows 3 (3) 2 (2) 1 time(s), then on every 4th row 16 (16) 17 (17) 18 times = 25 sts.

Continue until the collar (slightly stretched) fits along the oblique edge of the front to centre back. Cast off in pattern.

Left side

Like right side, only reverse the shaping.

Finishing

Block all parts to stated measurements, dampen and leave to dry. Sew shoulder seams.

Sleeve edges: Measure 21 (23) 25 (26) 27 cm from the shoulder seam on the back and fronts. Set stitch markers.

Using needles size 4 mm, pick up 96 (106) 114 (120) 124 sts evenly between the markers. Next row: k to end. Next 2 rows: k to last 8 (9) 10 (11) 12 sts. Now slip the next stitch purlwise, bring the yarn forward, return the slipped stitch to the left needle, bring the yarn to the back, and turn (this is called a “wrap and turn”, abbreviated w&t). Next 2 rows: k to last 16 (18) 20 (22) 24 sts, w&t. Next 2 rows: k to last 24 (27) 30 (33) 35 sts, w&t. Next 2 rows: k to last 32 (37) 41 (44) 46 sts, w&t. Next row: k to end. Work 4 rows in garter stitch over all sts. Cast off. Sew collar. Using invisible stitching, sew collar along the neckline on the fronts and across the back neck. Sew side seams.
