Knitting needles:

Tension:

2 pattern repeats (24 sts) to 11cm, and 2 pattern repeats (32 rows) to 9cm, over pattern on 4mm needles.

Check your tension – if less stitches use thinner needles, if more use thicker needles. It is essential to work to the stated tension to achieve the correct size of garment.

Where only one figure is given this applies to all sizes. Where the figure 0 appears, no sts, times or rows are worked for this size.

After casting off one stitch will remain on the right hand needle which is not included in the instructio­ns that follow.

Work on this set of sts only for first side of neck as follows: Keeping patt correct, cast off 5 (6) 7 (8) 9 sts at beg of 2nd and 0 (1) 1 (3) 3 foll alt rows, then 6 (7) 8 (0) 0 sts at beg of foll 3 (2) 2 (0) 0 alt rows and at same time dec 1 st at neck edge of next 6 rows, then on foll alt row. Work 1 row.

Join both shoulder seams. Mark centre back neck point. With RS facing and using 3½mm needles, starting at marked centre back neck point, pick up and knit 24 (25) 25 (26) 26 sts across left side of back neck, 98 (103) 107 (110) 112 sts down left front slope to beg of front slope shaping, and 101 (103) 103 (103) 105 sts down left front opening edge to cast-on edge. 223 (231) 235 (239) 243 sts.

FINISHING

Join row-end edges of bands at centre back neck. Mark points along side seam edges of back and fronts 22 (24) 26 (27) 28cm, either side of shoulder seams (to denote base of armhole openings). Fold sleeves in half lengthwise and placing folds to shoulder seams, sew shaped cast-off edge of sleeves to back and fronts between marked points. Join side and sleeve seams. Pin out cardigan to the measuremen­ts given. Cover with clean, damp cloths and leave to dry.
