Simply Knitting

Show us your stash!

Do you have a sizeable stash that needs investigating? This month we take a look at one of our readers’ ever-expanding yarn hauls. Could you be next?

How long have you been knitting?

My nanna taught me to knit when I was young, possibly eight or nine. I was hopeless but she was very patient – it didn’t really click. But since starting a family I took up knitting again and have been knitting avidly for the past seven years or so.

Have you been stashing all that lovely yarn since the beginning?

Thankfully no, as my stash is pretty extensive! I try to only buy yarn with a project in mind, but as there are so many projects on my wishlist I have amassed a sizeable stash. I have the biggest collection of sock yarn but have so far only ever knitted one sock. Learning Kitchener stitch is on my to-do list so I’m hopeful of a pair of socks in the future.

Do you have regular clear-outs?

I recently started making lap blankets for my local hospital and managed to make seven blankets just from my odds and ends bag of yarn. There’s another in progress as it’s good to have something simple to work on for TV knitting. I can’t bring myself to give away yarn as one day I’m hoping it’ll make it into the project it was originally purchased for.

What stashbusting project would you say you are most proud of?

I have a fondness for blankets and these end up being king-sized or bigger so we can snuggle up under them as a family. I recently started to experiment with lace knitting and have a collection of beautiful shawls. There are two currently on my needles that I switch between depending on my mood.

Favourite stash yarn?

Scheepjes Whirl. This range is my weakness as I love gradient yarns.

Do you have any exciting plans for buying more yarn stash?

Of course! There are always new projects I want to try, and life is too short not to buy all the yarn.
