Knitting needles: Size 3½ and 4 mm

Tension:

19 sts and 39.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm in half-brioche rib and colour blocks on size 4 mm needles.

Selvage stitches: On every row: K first st, sl last st kwise.

Chart A/B, C/D, E/F: Numbers at left edge of charts indicate WS rows, numbers at right edge of charts indicate RS rows. Charts begin with a WS row. Work to patt rep, work 2 sts between arrows for patt rep, work to end of chart. Sts shown in grey are worked as two-stitch selvage.

For rib patt, work rows 1 – 3 of chart A (C) E once, then rep rows 2 and 3.

For half-brioche rib, work rows 1 – 4 of chart B (D) F once, then rep rows 3 and 4.

Note: 1 stitch and 1 yo are treated as 1 stitch.

St st: K on RS, p on WS.

Colour blocks: * Work 22 rows (6 cm) with 1 strand Alessia and 1 strand Silkhair held tog, then 26 rows (6 cm) with single strand Alessia. Rep from * throughout.

Full-fashion decrease: At beg of RS row, work first 2 sts, skp; (= slip 1 stitch as if to knit, knit 1 stitch, pass slipped stitch over knitted stitch). At end of RS row, work to last 4 sts, k2tog, work rem 2 sts.

When only one figure is given, it applies to all sizes.

BACK

Cast on 105 (113) 121 sts using 3½ mm needles and Alessia.

Beg and end with a WS row, work chart A for 13 rows and piece meas 3.5cm from cast-on.

Change to size 4 mm needles. Work chart B and work colour blocks for 118 rows = 30 cm.

Shape armholes: Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Working full-fashion dec, dec 1 st at each end of [every RS row 1 time, then every alt RS row 1 time] 3 times. [85 (93) 101 sts]

Cont chart B until 80 (84) 88 rows have been worked from beg of armhole shaping and armhole meas 20 (21) 22 cm.

Shape shoulders: At each shoulder edge cast off 4 sts 1 time, then 4 sts 1 time, 3 sts 8 times (then 4 sts 5 times, 3 sts 4 times) then 4 sts 9 times.

Cast off rem 21 sts.

POCKET LINING (MAKE 2)

Cast on 29 sts using 4 mm needles and Alessia. Work in St st for 11 cm, ending with a WS row. Place sts on holder, cut yarn.

LEFT FRONT

Cast on 56 (60) 64 sts using 3½mm needles and Alessia. Beg and end with a WS row, work chart C for 13 rows and piece meas 3.5 cm from cast-on.

Change to size 4 mm needles. Work chart D and work colour blocks for 48 rows = 12 cm.

Work pocket: Next row (RS) Patt over first 6 (10) 14 sts; work rib patt chart A over next 29 sts, patt to end.

Next row (WS) Patt over first 21 sts, work rib patt as establishe­d over next 29 sts, patt to end.

Next row (RS) Patt over first 6 (10) 14 sts; with single strand Alessia only, work rib patt as establishe­d over next 29 sts, patt to end. Work in patt as set by last row for another 8 rows, ending with a RS row. Next row (WS) Patt over first 21 sts, cast off next 29 sts, patt to end. Next row (RS): Patt over first 6 (10) 14 sts; work 29 sts of lining into patt, patt to end.

Cont chart D and colour blocks across all sts until same length as back to armhole.

Shape armhole at right edge same as for back. [46 (50) 54 sts] Work even until same length as back to shoulder. Shape shoulder at right edge same as for back = 14 sts rem for front band.

Cont in patt across front band sts for 6 cm.

Cast off all sts.

RIGHT FRONT

Work same as left front, reversing all shaping and work chart E/F.

SLEEVES

With size 3½ mm needles and Alessia cast on 75 (79) 83 sts. Beg and end with a WS row, work chart A for 17 rows and piece meas 5 cm from cast-on. Change to size 4 mm needles. Work chart B and work colour blocks for 166 rows = 42 cm. Shape sleeve cap: Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Working full-fashion dec, dec 1 st at each end of [every RS row 1 time, then every alt RS row 1 time] 3 times. Work 1 WS row. Cast off 7 sts at beg of next 6 rows. Cast off rem 13 (17) 21 sts.

FINISHING

Pin pieces to measuremen­ts and block. Sew shoulder seams. Sew bound-off edges of neckbands tog, then sew neckband to back neck edge. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew pocket linings to front pieces.

Check your tension – if less stitches use thinner needles, if more use thicker needles.

It is essential to work to the stated tension to achieve the correct size of garment.

Where only one figure is given this applies to all sizes. Where the figure 0 appears, no sts, times or rows are worked for this size. After casting off one stitch will remain on the right hand needle which is not included in the instructio­ns that follow.

K5B (knit stitch 5 rows below) slip next stitch off left hand needle and drop 4 rows down. Insert point of right hand needle under the strands and into the stitch on the 5th row down. Insert the left hand needle under the strands and into the stitch. Knit the stitch in the usual way catching the strands at the same time.

BACK

Cast on 75 (83) 87 sts Using 4mm needles and thumb method.

Cast on 54 (59) 63 sts using 4mm needles and thumb method. Working in st-st (throughout) cont until work measures 10 (12) 14 cm ending with a WS row.

Shape raglan

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 46 (51) 55 sts.

1st row. K1, s1, K1, psso, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, K1. [44 (49) 53 sts]

2nd row. Purl.

Last 2 rows set raglan shaping. Work 38 (42) 46 rows dec 1 st at each end as before in next and every foll alt row. [6 (7) 7 sts]

Cast off rem 6 (7) 7 sts.

Neckband

Join raglan seams. Fold last 2 sts at front edge onto WS and slip stitch loosely in position to beg of neck shaping.

With RS facing, using 4mm needles and commencing at beg of neck shaping on right front, pick up and knit 15 (17) 19 sts evenly along shaped edge (working through double thickness at front edge), 6 (7) 7 sts from top of right sleeve, 27 (31) 31 sts from cast off sts at back of neck, 6 (7) 7 sts from top of left sleeve and 15 (17) 19 sts evenly along shaped edge of left front (working through double thickness

at front edge), ending at beg of neck shaping. 69 (79) 83 sts. Commencing with 2nd row of st-st work 5 rows.

Cast off loosely.

CORDS (BOTH ALIKE)

Using 3½mm crochet hook make 55 (60) 65 ch, turn.

Work 1 row of dc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Join side and sleeve seams, reversing sewing for st-st roll. Attach a cord to each front at level with the neck shaping as shown in the photograph.

Block out garment to the measuremen­ts given and place under damp cloths and leave until dry.

RIGHT FRONT

Cast on 66 (76) sts using 4mm needles, work in basic pattern.

For neck shaping, when the piece measures 54 (62)cm from the cast on-edge, at the right-hand edge, bind off 14 sts, then dec in every other row 14x 1 st.

When the piece measures 62 (70) cm from the cast on-edge, cast off all sts.

FINISHING

Dampen and block the pieces, allow to dry. Sew shoulder seams over 16 (20)cm in mattress stitch, leaving 28 (32)cm from the cast on-edge and from the bind off-edge open, then start the shoulder seam, see A in schematic. Now fold at the back seam B and C at the fold lines to the wrong side of the piece. Now join seams B of back and front and join seams C of back and front, do not stretch the seams. Using the crochet hook, work 3 rnd dc across the lower edge, the front edge and the neck edge, always work 3 dc in 1 dc at the corner.
