Knit rows 1 – 4, then rep rows 3 and 4 for half brioche rib.

Rib st

Rep rnd 1 for rib st.

BACK

Cast on 43 (47) 53 (55) sts using 9mm needles.

Row 1 (RS) Sl1 (edge st), *K1, P1, rep from * to the last 2 sts, K1, K1(edge st).

Rows 2 and 4 (WS) Sl1 (edge st), *P1, K1, rep from * to the last 2 sts, P1, K1(edge st).

Row 3 Sl1 (edge st), * K1below, P1, rep from * to the last 2 sts, K1below, K1(edge st).

Knit rows 1 – 4, then rep rows 3 and 4 for half brioche rib, inc on alternate rows as follows:

1st row inc (RS) Sl1 (edge st), 5 sts half brioche rib, M1L (=lift strand between sts from RS with left needle, k trough back loop), work to the 6 last sts, M1R (=lift strand between sts from WS with left needle, k trough front loop), 5 sts half brioche rib, K1(edge st) – 2 sts increased

3rd row Inc (RS) Sl1 (edge st), 5 sts half brioche rib, M1P (= lift strand between sts from RS with left needle, p through front loop), work to last 6 sts, M1P, 5 sts half brioche rib, K1(edge st) – 2 sts increased. Inc 8 times. Work WS rows in pattern and incorporate new sts into the pattern.

When all increases have been completed, work even with 59 (63) 69 (71) sts.

Shape armhole

When back measures 33 (32) 31 (30)cm cast off 1 st at beginning of the next 2 rows, then after 4 more rows dec as follows:

Dec row (RS) Sl1 (edge st), 3 sts half brioche rib, k3tog (into the row below), work to the last 7 sts, sl2tog knitwise, K1below, psso, 3 sts half brioche rib, K1(edge st) – 4 sts decreased.

Rep dec again on the next 2 RS rows.

When all decreases have been completed you will have 45 (49) 55 (57) sts.

Work even, then begin shoulder shaping when armhole measures 24 (25) 26 (27) cm, mark 19 (19) 21 (21) centre sts for neck, with 13 (15) 17 (18) sts each side.

Note Please read through the next section carefully before starting to knit you will be shaping the shoulders and neck at the same time, so will need to keep track of cast off sts at each edge separately.

Shape shoulder and neck Next row (RS) Cast off 2 (2) 3 (3) sts for shoulder, work to first marker then leave these sts on a holder for right side, remove marker and cast off the next 19 (19) 21 (21) sts, remove marker and work to end. Now work each side separately.

Left side (WS) Cast off2 (2) 3 (3) for shoulder and work to end, cast off 2 sts as smoothly as possible at beginning of the next RS row (neck edge), continue to cast off at beginning of WS rows for shoulder 2 (2) 3 (3) sts, then 2 (3) 3 (3) sts, 2 (3) 3 (3) sts and 3 (3) 3 (4) sts.

Right side With WS facing work to end, cast off 2 (2) 3 (3) sts at beginning of the next RS row, cast off 2 sts as smoothly as possible at beginning of the next WS row (neck edge), then continue to cast off at beginning of RS rows 2 (3) 3 (3) sts, 2 (3) 3 (3) sts and 3 (3) 3 (4) sts.

Next row (RS) work to first marker then leave these sts on a holder for right side, remove marker and cast off the next 11 (11) 13 (13) sts, remove marker and work to end. Now work each side separately.

Left side (WS) Cast off 2 sts as smoothly as possible at beginning of the next 2 alternate RS rows (neck edge), then after 6 more rows dec (RS) sl1 (edge st), 3 sts half brioche rib, k3tog (into the row below), work to end.
