NEW SOUND TECHNOLOGY: DOLBY ATMOS AND DTS VIRTUAL:X

There’s a revolution happening in home entertainment sound.

- BY STEVE MAY

Audio has evolved from channel based surround sound, like Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS, to object-based formats like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

Dolby Atmos has transformed the way feature films are mixed in postproduction. Unlike earlier surround sound formats, Dolby Atmos is object- rather than channel-based. This means instead of panning sounds left and right and front to back, sound designers can steer elements in a scene individually, not only around you but up high as well. The result is a stunning new level of precision. Small wonder Dolby Atmos has been called 3D for your ears.

The technology brings out the very best in any home audio system. A Yamaha AV receiver with Dolby Atmos uses multiple loudspeakers to immerse you with sound. A Yamaha YSP Digital Sound Projector does much the same, but using advanced controllable beam technology.

Once you experience Dolby Atmos, you won’t want to go back.

Sadly, not everything is Dolby Atmos encoded. You’ll still be listening to lots of regular 5.1 and even stereo material on your Yamaha audio equipment. The good news is with the system’s Dolby Surround mode, any non-Atmos source gets a virtual up-mix for amazing 3D sound.

DTS:X is a rival to Dolby Atmos, with similar attributes. What’s particularly exciting is DTS Virtual: X, as found on the YAS-207 soundbar. DTS Virtual: X uses ingenious Digital Signal processing techniques to offer a comparable immersive listening experience, complete with overhead virtual effects, all without the need for extra speakers. It creates a soundstage that’s wide and high, yet doesn’t require walls to bounce off. DTS Virtual:X enhances the clarity of dialogue, and adds a sensation of extra bass. It’ll transform the way you watch TV.

With Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X, Yamaha is ushering in a whole new era in home entertainment audio.
