BETTER OFF DEAD?

THANKS to the power of the internet and the inescapable stupidity of human beings, the AU Falcon has gathered a rather large cult following in recent years. Young millennials have taken meme culture to a new level, turning what is arguably Australia’s ugliest and least-loved car into an internet hero. This fascination with the cockroach of Australian motoring recently prompted an event on Facebook, ‘Storm The Old Ford Factory and Restart AU Falcon Production’. While clearly a joke, the event gathered enough steam to generate over 8000 people ‘attending’, 20,000 people interested, and news stories from The Herald Sun and 3AW radio. We shared the event with you lot on our Facebook page; here’s what you had to say.

Junemike Denison – If you’re going to fire up the machines at the Ford factory, make it a decent model, like the XB or XY.

Bryon Vanderheul – The ugliest Ford ever made. Garry Harvey – Even the assemblers said it was ugly!

Kev Fenwick – I HATED the AU until my old boss let me drive his old 220 XR8. After that I bought a Series I XR6 and loved it. They’re probably the most underrated car ever built in Australia.

Glen Neeves – Remake one of the ugliest Fords ever built? I could only imagine what kind of a basement-dwelling nerd would want more AU Falcons in the world.

Darren Hughes – This has to happen! I might trade in the FG and grab an AU XR8 and an AU ute.

Scott Udy – The XD, XE and XF were superior to the AU and better looking. Tony Hackford – Please no. We should put all the AU Falcons on a little island along with their owners and let them rot.

Rob Muik – The AU was a flop and nearly broke Ford. The EF before was much better and the BA after was the best ever. Andrew Winnin – There must be a shortage of cars to use in ram-raids on Liquorlands. Don Williams – The ugly car that brought Ford to the brink of ruin and made Commodores look good. Yes, let’s do that again. Jason Faulkner – Let’s all storm the Ford company! Oh wait, my Falcon won’t start. Trevor Stradbrook – Let’s make decent XD Falcon door handles.
