MONSTER HQ

IN THE June issue we revealed early information on Daniel Szabolics’s stunning HQ coupe build, powered by a twin-turbo big-block Chevy. Frank Marchese from Dandy Engines is steering the tune-up and racing development, and the car is now up and running.

The road ahead is long but very promising for the team, especially after a recent hub dyno session when, on light boost, the HQ cranked out a thoroughly stupifying 2513.7rwhp!

The car recently made the journey to Willowbank for Jamboree and ran a best of 7.37-seconds at 193mph. The build quality of the car is incredible, and we look forward to bringing you further updates.

IMPROVED MALOO

KIM Smith’s addiction to horsepower and drag racing shows no signs of abating. Her 2011 Maloo R8 started life with an aspirated 6.0L LS, and was soon fitted with an LSA supercharger, then a bigger intercooler, and she wrung the neck out of that combination until it all went pear-shaped at last year’s Drag Challenge, when she drove over the rods in the burnout box.

Down but not out, Kim is now well into the build of a new combo with 1000hp on tap and has her sights set on the mid-nine-second zone. The new powerplant is a 404ci combination from Troy Worsley at Warspeed, fitted with a Gen II GTX4720 turbo and a MOTEC engine management system, as well as the factory ECU running all the lights, audio, a/c and the like.

The six-speed has been ditched for a built 4L80E with a Reid bellhousing, SDE converter, transbrake and manual-shift valve-body. To make life easier, the turbo will be rear-mounted in the spare wheel well.

The car won’t be finished in time for Drag Challenge this year, but it sure looks like a sexy combination, with all the best people and parts involved.

PSC STEPPING UP

SYDNEY’S PSC Racing has been doing some killer work lately, and owner Mark has been slowly developing his own ride, a tough LH Torana that’s gone 8.1 on radials with a built 6.0L and a Chinese turbo.

PSC has a bunch of cool cars in the build, but one of the sweetest would have to be Ben Christie’s VL Group A clone. Ben’s last VL was totalled just two weeks after completion when it lost a wheel on the freeway, but his new car is simply stunning, fitted with a cammed LSA, built TH400, chassis connectors, VL Turbo diff and one of the nicest set of mini-tubs we’ve ever seen courtesy of Ultimate Metalwork. From the monster brakes and huge wheels to the fabbed oil pan, this car is going to be tough as hell.

We’re not sure if it will ever be a racer, but it will make a killer street car.
