LETTER OF THE MONTH

NAILED IT

HI GUYS, I clearly recall an article you published probably around 10 or so years ago that delved into building model cars. The bit I’m interested in is where one of the builders recommended using nail polish in your airbrush instead of paint, as it was much easier and cheaper to find candies, metallics and flakes in the beauty section at the local Kmart than anywhere else. I’m almost sure one of the models featured was a green XB hardtop drag car.

I can’t find the article on the website or in my collection; any chance you could set me right?

Love the mag (bible!) – I can’t wait for my monthly fix!

John, email

G’DAY, John! My yarn on Jimmi K’s model cars appeared in the May 2006 issue, and did indeed feature the green XB you mention. No mention of nail polish in the yarn though, but it is definitely something that model builders use. One thing I would suggest is that you test it first to make sure it doesn’t affect the plastic, but if it’s a die-cast model, it shouldn’t be a problem at all. – Boris Viskovic

WHY is Motorex in Melbourne in 2020? It was in Melbourne in 2019 (pictured). Please explain. It was supposed to alternate between Sydney and Melbourne. I reckon Motorex should stay in Sydney permanently. Melbourne should get its own show – stop stealing ours.

Rhett Corbett, email HEY mate, Motorex has been Melbourneonly since 2018; the last Sydney show was 2017. The Sydney venue was spectacular under the dome, but was restrictive in terms of what other elements could be added to the event (for example, drifting and space for the outdoor show ’n’ shine). The organisers would have loved to alternate between the two, but the difference in venues ultimately made the decision. Luckily Sydney still has the Hot Rod & Custom Auto Expo, scheduled for 29-30 May 2021 at Rosehill Racecourse. – Telfo
