HAMMER BLOW

-

IN MAY, we covered the sale of Australia’s most expensive road-going LJ Torana GTR XU-1. The super-low-mileage example went under the hammer at Burns & Co Auctions, selling for an astronomical $295,000 – over $100,000 more than the previous record-holding XU-1. Here’s what you had to say about the result on Facebook.

Mike Denison – I remember them coming off the line at the Elizabeth plant in ’72 at a tad more than $3K – maybe less.

Anthony Byrne – Real race-bred street car.

Daniel Vose – Considering how much Monaros go for, this is a bargain! They’ll be going for $1 million in the near future.

Michael Kilgour – Soooo wish I hadn’t written mine off. Mine was a June 72. Looked exactly like this one.

Joseph Mason – Now he can afford a second-hand 200-Series Land Cruiser.

Rory B Bellows – You could buy a house – or an XU-1!

Lucan William Heron – Do you think all model Holdens from this era will fetch this sort of price one day?

Jason Andrew – They are all going up. Pick the right model and you’re sitting on a goldmine. A mate has a ’68 GTS 186 Monaro with just over 100,000 miles on the clock. Got offered $200K for it. It’s only a bloody six-cylinder!

Rick Lingwood – And to think I had two of them, LOL!

John M Smith – Jaysus – have they never driven one?

Ruth Ferrier – You will never see a Kia, Daewoo or Hyundai fetch a price like that. Go GM!

Ash Newbold – For a rebadged Vauxhall?

Craig Barlow – Looks a crapload better than any Vauxhall.

Patrick Schembri – Back in 1989, this bloke wanted to sell me his GTR XU-1. It had a blown clutch and he couldn’t afford to fix it, so he offered it to me for $4000. I told him to go and get effed! I guess I’m the one who got effed! If we only knew then what we know now.

Greg Broderick – Values for Toranas and Dunnydores from 1972 to 2020 are going through the roof, while the Blue Oval brigade continue to bleat about one car. I grew up a Ford fan, and the more I look back, the more I wonder why.

Brad Rowlandson – Any two-door Falcon is apparently worth gold at the moment; you just have to look at the ‘Chicken Coupe’ or the other XA RPO 83 for sale at the moment. I’m very impressed with the XP coupe that sold at auction the other day for $71K. Yes, that one certain Falcon will always demand a ton of money – it’s a halo car. Did you know the hammer dropped on GT-F number 500 the other day? Seven figures.

Linc John – Dammit! I was prepared to go $330K, but slept in and missed the auction. s FML.
