- BY SUE WATSON, EFM HEALTH CLUB

So we are now in the middle of winter and the slow cooker has been going non-stop for the past six weeks.

The lounge, a good book or movie with the blanket seems a much better option that going out for a brisk walk or to the gym.

If you haven’t already heard the expression “summer bodies are made in winter” then you have now and it is so true.

So, why not use doona season to set yourself some goals and start looking at fitness centres offering 12-week challenges and get your body looking it’s spring best.

Instead of feeling miserable about these winter months, think of it as your pre-season training.

No matter what your fitness level or how frantic your lifestyle is, there is a 12-week plan out there to suit your lifestyle.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives with body tone all over, more energy, improving your fitness and feeling fantastic, even on those short dark days.

HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET STARTED.

Make it easy for yourself — spend Sunday cooking a few healthy staples for your week, pack your gym bag the night before and have it by the door.

Break your goals down — losing 30kg might seem like an overwhelming task, so break it down into weekly manageable goals.

Avoid fad diets and overly intense workouts that can be unsustainable.

Action, not outcomes should be your focus — don’t fixate on a number on the scales or a dress size but rather the small changes like having a salad with your meal or drinking a glass of water with each meal.

These are more tangible actions that lead to a healthier and happier you.

Make it fun — try a class you’ve heard about, a bootcamp with friends or mix things up on the gym floor with adding equipment such as a BOSU or TRX.

Give yourself a break — rest and replenish the body.

Try a yoga class or just take a walk with the family or the dog.

As long as you are eating a balanced meal most days of the week, allow yourself a small indulgence without feeling guilty.
