Erin Rayner chats to Style

Describe your style?

I use a monochrome style, paired with fine lines and details to create intricate drawings. My pieces are heavily influenced by nature. They are very simplistic, often focussing on botanical elements with subtle geometric qualities.

When did you start painting/drawing?

I have been drawing and creating since before I can remember. It was when I was in high school that I started to take a more serious interest and began exploring different mediums to find a style that I enjoyed.

How has it evolved and what has influenced this?

Initially I enjoyed using watercolours but progressed to black ink drawings because I felt like I had more control of the lines I was drawing and able to create more intricate details. I consistently try and create a sense of balance in symmetry within my pieces.

Why do you enjoy painting/drawing?

I find drawing, especially the detailed drawings I create, to be extremely therapeutic and relaxing. The fine lines and patterns have a very calming feel to them. The pieces I draw are very time consuming, and being a perfectionist, each line is carefully positioned and thought out. When I start to draw I completely immerse myself within the artwork, often for hours at a time.

How did you feel about winning the John Winn Memorial Award for Emerging Artist at the Grammar Art Show?

I was thrilled. It has definitely inspired and motivated me to keep creating and evolving my work.

What inspires you?

My main source of inspiration is nature, more specifically native Australian plants. I’m always looking for interesting flowers and botanical elements to incorporate into my designs. Inspiration from artists includes Georges Seurat, with his use of Pointillism, and Monet’s beautiful landscapes with his use of simple, but effective, colour palettes.

What do you like about toowoomba?

I love the number of parks and green spaces there are, interspersed with the various old buildings. The city is really beginning to feel very cultural with more and more street art and events happening throughout the year.

What is your dream goal or project?

It has always been a goal of mine to create a series of pieces for my own solo show. I would also love to visit galleries all over the world. It’s an amazing feeling to see an artwork in person.
