A DIFFERENT LOOK AT DIETING

Lifeshape Clinic dietitian Nicola Moore shares her simple tips to look and feel great for your next big event.

If you have a special occasion coming up, it’s perfectly normal to want to shed a little extra weight to feel more confident on the day.

However there’s no need to resort to crash diets when subtle, daily changes to your nutrition and physical activity will get you results.

The simplest way to improve your nutrition in the lead up to a big event is to eliminate your discretionary calories.

“This includes milky coffees, juice, soda, and the extra glasses of wine, and decreasing your meat by ¼ at each meal,” Nicola explains.

“Replace these with water, herbal tea and bulk your meals up with non-starchy vegetables or salad.”

Next, increase your physical activity by just 10 minutes more a day.

“Being more active doesn’t have to mean slogging it out at the gym,” Nicola says.

“Some fun ways to fit in extra physical activity include gardening, playing in the backyard with the kids, or walking them to school.”

The key to weight management is ensuring consistent, positive behaviours even when an event isn’t coming up. “The goal of our Lifeshape programs is to encourage our clients to live a life of balance year round,” Nicola says. “Simply making an effort to introduce daily, healthy habits is huge step in the right direction towards a more confident, healthy you.” Visit Lifeshape Clinic at Medici Medical Centre, Suite 103, Level 1, on the corner of Scott and Curzon streets.
