#Pressforprogress for International Women’s Day

-

On March 8, USQ is rallying the community to #Pressforprogress at the third annual USQ Shine International Women’s Day Luncheon.

Supported by YMCA Queensland, the event will also mark the announcement of the 2018 winners of the USQ Shine Bursary.

International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate women and a strong call to action for whole communities to think, act and be gender-inclusive.

This year’s event will also feature a panel discussion on ‘investing in your future’, presented by the USQ Women’s Network and led by USQ alumnae international journalist Rebecca Vonhoff and managing director of Taylor’s Removals, Melissa Taylor.

Rebecca says her speech could be an uncomfortable reality check for Toowoomba.

“I’ve seen on Twitter a #metootoowoomba hashtag, so it will be interesting to see what comes of that,” she says.

“2018 is a time of cultural reckoning and I think how the city marks the day will be telling.

“Are we happy with the status quo or do we think there needs to be change, and are we willing to make that change?”

However, in Rebecca’s eyes, #Pressforprogress has a multitude of uses.

“I take it to mean two things: that the press can be used for progress, and that women ought to push for progress – and I’d say particularly in workplaces,” she says.

Alongside a wonderful two-course lunch, there will be lucky door prizes, raffle prizes and a silent auction, thanks to 29 supportive sponsors from the generous community.

The emcee for the event will be Hit FM host Gabi Elgood.
