Ar­rests made in drug haul

TER­RI­TORY po­lice have seized as much as $850,000 worth of am­phet­a­mines in Kather­ine.

De­tec­tive Se­nior Sergeant Clint Sims from the North­ern In­ves­ti­ga­tion Sec­tion said a ve­hi­cle was ap­pre­hended on Giles St at about 4pm Thurs­day.

He al­leged po­lice dis­cov­ered 884.6g of an am­phet­a­mine- type sub­stance un­der the back seat of the ve­hi­cle.

A man, 39, and a woman, 37, were taken into cus­tody and charged with sup­ply­ing a com­mer­cial quan­tity of am­phet­a­mine.

They were due to ap­pear in court yes­ter­day.

De­tec­tive Se­nior Sergeant Sims said the street value of the sched­ule II drug is es­ti­mated to be be­tween $750,000 and $850,000.

‘‘ Po­lice are ex­tremely happy that th­ese drugs have been seized, il­le­gally pro­duced am­phet­a­mine sub­stances can cause se­ri­ous harm, both psy­cho­log­i­cal and phys­i­cal ad­dic­tion, hal­lu­ci­na­tions and bizarre, ag­gres­sive and vi­o­lent be­hav­iour,’’ he said.

‘‘ We will con­tinue to tar­get the peo­ple deal­ing in th­ese sub­stances in the in­ter­est of harm min­imi­sa­tion and keep­ing peo­ple safe.’’
