PATRIOTS DAY (M) An extremely well-handled retelling of the bombing of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Mark Wahlberg plays a cop loosely based on several officers who worked on the case, and his perspective is blended with that of the perpetrators and bystanders. GOLD (M) This is inspired by the true story of Kenny Wells, a mining trader who obtained first rights to a huge deposit of gold in Indonesia. But after getting very, very lucky, he gets unlucky in even swifter fashion. Although this is No Wolf of Wall Street, Matthew McConaughey is excellent as the lead. SPLIT (M) A wacky story about a man with a severe splitpersonality disorder (he has 24 personalities, to be precise), expertly played by James McAvoy. One of those personalities has the makings of a serial killer. Or might already be one — he has three teenage girls held hostage ... LIVE BY NIGHT (MA15+) We all know Ben Affleck can direct, but this is his first stumbling block in that department. He also stars in this offering as a WWI hero who ends up as a low-level crook when he returns home. Caught between Italian and Irish crime lords, he’s also stuck in a plot with way too many holes. LION (PG) An amazing tale based on the true story of Saroo, a five-year-old who gets separated from his family in India, ends up in an orphanage and is then adopted by an Australian couple and taken to Tasmania. As an adult he attempts to track down his blood family, resulting in an inspiring, hopeful offering. An absolute pleasure to watch. JACKIE (MA 15+) An extraordinary biopic about the wife of assassinated US president John F Kennedy, this follows the story of how Jacqueline Kennedy avoided a seemingly lifelong fate as a glamorous object of pity. An insight into the 20th century’s most famous widow. ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY (M) Star Wars like you’ve never seen it before. The impressive, somewhat unrelenting battle scenes alone leave the other instalments feeling like a street parade. Don’t expect Jedi mind tricks, lightsabers and death chokes. Do expect pure entertainment.
