WHY KIDS SHOULD DITCH THE TOYS

- MOLLY BAXTER

FAMILIES are being urged to cull their kids’ toys to get them outside to enjoy some fresh Territory air.

But too many toys aren’t an issue for one Nightcliff family who have settled in Darwin after six months of travelling around Australia.

Esther and Casper Pike weren’t allowed too many toys on their trip and have kept up the habit.

Esther, 11, and her brother Casper, 4, only have a handful of toys but they prefer to read, swim in their pool or draw, over playing with toys.

“When my friends come over we prefer to talk or draw, “Esther said.

Her little brother Casper loves Lego but much prefers an afternoon swimming in the pool with his blow-up shark. The average western child owns more than 150 toys and is given an extra 70 every year which can cause unnecessary stress by too much stimulation.

Parents can avoid this by culling toys and chucking out the broken ones.
