- PHILLIPPA BUTT

A CYCLONE warning has been declared for Groote Eylandt ahead of an expected category two system today, and residents are urged to enact their emergency plan.

The Bureau of Meteorology is monitoring a low between Groote Eylandt and Mornington Island, off the coast of Port McArthur, and warns of possible gale force winds.

The tropical low turned northwards yesterday, and mainly remained over land, however a BoM warning stated it was likely to move.

“The tropical low is expected to move back over water early Sunday and may develop into a tropical cyclone during Sunday,” the warning stated.

“It is possible that the system may reach category two.”
