THIS IS GOLD Get set to shimmer, sparkle and shine day and night with the stunning metallic colours making the latest fashions priceless

- GEORGINA MURPHY

All that glitters truly is gold, or silver, or bronze, with a shimmer of velour and pleats too, and it is a look that is easy to sparkle in. Metallic-inspired fashion has shone its way into our wardrobes via the international designer catwalks and we’re going bold in gold, without the four-figure price tag.

A colour scheme previously reserved for the more flamboyant among us has swept other fashion trends up in its wake, including the mini and midi (mid-calf) skirt, nightwear as day wear, and active wear.

The glitterati revolution is being embraced by subtle threads interwoven into dark fabrics, shiny velvet and velour, satin, lace and metallicdyed faux leather.

Without running the risk of looking like a disco ball, or a walking Christmas tree, fashionistas can dip their toe into the look with sparkly sandals and embellished t-shirts, or enjoy the revival of an old favourite, the sew-on patch – for clothing and on accessories alike.

You could even experiment with everything from hair scrunchies and bows to glitter socks.

Madi Teake, who owns Darwin Clothing Hire, opted for shimmer over subtlety this week in an array of on-trend options all found locally.

The aptly named Indian Sunset pants, by Australian label Bec & Bridge, as worn by Madi, have been a customer hire favourite. They’re a sell-out across the country too. “Metallics are such a great way to add a ‘pop’ to any look, and standout,” Madi said.

“For a dazzling but easy look, pair back your metallic with a simple top (or bottom) and heels.”

Incorporating some shine into your everyday wardrobe without looking like you’re ready for the dance floor can be achieved by mixing your metallic piece with classic colours such as black, white or navy.

An embellished trim on a cuff or collar is certainly acceptable for the boardroom — a sequined mini skirt, perhaps more so for the bar.

And bigger items on the shimmer scale don’t need to cost you too much gold — this Gucciinspired pleated silver skirt at Forever New is $119.95, and Factorie has a soft pink foil pleat for $39.95.
