Full-strength Wanderers relish St Mary’s rematch

- JOSH SPASARO

THIS one’s for the haters and the doubters.

That was Wanderers coach Dean Rioli’s message to his players after their stunning 22point upset victory over Nightcliff at TIO Stadium last night.

The Eagles are now preparing for a blockbuster semi-final clash against NTFL premier- ship favourites St Mary’s.

And they believe they suddenly have the available personnel to beat their conquerors from last season’s grand final.

Not many thought Wanderers would be playing the Saints with a second chance in the finals after they limped in, following a massive upset 24point loss to lowly Palmerston.

“It was a great team effort by the boys. So many people doubted us throughout the year,” Rioli said.

“I think they just don’t understand the amount of players we have unavailable every week.

“We’re talking 10, 12, 14 players from our best 22 unavailable.

“So for us to be written off like that it’s unfair but that’s how it is – you get judged on your performances.

“With our full list together we know we’ll threaten most sides.”

Suddenly, Wanderers believe they can beat St Mary’s who have strung together a 15game winning streak.

“We’ll be at full strength and so will St Mary’s, so we’re in for a good match,” Rioli said.

“They are by far the best side in the competition.

“But if we can defend the way we did as a team tonight, we can win.”

Rioli had a simple message for his troops last night.

“Enjoy it because we were written off,” he said.

“I know we work hard on the track but really enjoy and celebrate it.”
