School celebrates centenary

THE Cathedral School has celebrated it 100th year with the largest group of Year 12 students ever.

In 2017, 100 years after the opening of the school in 1917, The Cathedral School will start the year with its largest ever cohort of Year 12 students.

When the school opened in 1917, there was a total enrolment of 71 students, just over half the number in the 100th Year 12 cohort.

The Cathedral School principal Ian Gamack said he was very excited about this year.

“We ended 2016 on such a high with our fantastic Year 12 results and we are even more excited for what this year will bring,” he said.

In 2016, five students received an OP1 — the highest score possible in Queensland, and 90 per cent of the eligible cohort received an OP from 1 to 15, compared with a state average of 81.35 per cent.

“We are so proud of their achievements and the variety of exciting pathways that lie ahead for them,” Mr Gamack said.

“They set a very high standard for our next cohort to follow, and I am sure the class of 2017 will meet these expectations, especially in such an important year for the school.

“We have many celebrations planned to mark our centenary, and we are looking forward to sharing these with our past and present students, staff and families.

“Not all schools reach this amazing milestone, particu- larly ones that have had the fascinating history of our school.”

The school started out as St Anne’s Church of England Girls’ School, operated by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent.

After evacuation during WWII, and relocation from the city to Mundingburra in the late 1950s, the school sadly farewelled its founding Sisters in 1978.

Soon after, it became coeducational and changed its name, and since then has evolved into the modern independent Anglican school that it is today. More information about The Cathedral School’s centenary celebrations can be found by visiting cathedral.qld.edu.au/centenary.
