MOONLIGHT (M) A wise coming-of-age drama that is one of the best movies of the year so far. It follows the life of a bullied child growing up in a drug-infested Miami, and the only helping hand being offered to him belongs to a neighbourhood drug dealer. The two strike up an unlikely bond, but the protector knows he won’t be around forever... HIDDEN FIGURES (PG) An inspiring true story about a group of female African-American mathematicians who were employed by NASA at a time when ‘coloureds’ still had to use separate toilets. Overcoming one hurdle after another, the women realise their ambitions and become pioneers in their field. FIFTY SHADES DARKER (MA15+) This is something of a same-again, lamer-thanbefore sequel adapted from the middle instalment of EL James’ trilogy of heavybreathing howlers. Plenty of pants down, tops up action to distract viewers from the fact there’s not much of a plot. RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER (MA15+) Maybe the last chapter in the samey, gamey movies that concentrate on the heroine carving up zillions of zombies for our viewing pleasure. Or maybe not. Who knows? Who cares? PATRIOTS DAY (M) An extremely well-handled retelling of the bombing of the 2013 Boston Marathon. Mark Wahlberg plays a cop loosely based on several officers who worked on the case, and his perspective is blended with that of the perpetrators and bystanders. SPLIT (M) A wacky story about a man with a severe splitpersonality disorder (he has 24 personalities, to be precise), expertly played by James McAvoy. One of those personalities has the makings of a serial killer. Or might already be one — he has three teenage girls held hostage ... LION (PG) Based on the true story of Saroo, a five-year-old who gets separated from his family in India, ends up in an orphanage and is then adopted by an Australian couple and taken to Tasmania. As an adult he attempts to track down his blood family, resulting in an inspiring, hopeful offering.
