COUTURE FOR A CAUSE It’s the time of year when our diaries start filling up with elegant events to raise money for a number of great Territory charities

-

Fashion and fundraising will be an on-trend double act throughout this year’s Territory event season, as gowns and a good cause go hand-inhand along the red carpet. One of the first events of the dry season, the Cancer Council NT’s Gala Ball will this year take place on April 29, and has collaborated with Darwin-based designer Kevin de Beer to design a ball gown that will be auctioned off at the soiree.

The gown, modelled by Tiah Portelli at Char Restaurant this week for Frontier, will be one of several exclusive items auctioned throughout the evening.

Best of all, any funds raised stay right here in the Territory.

Describing his masterpiece, Kevin said his design is flamenco-dancer inspired.

The choice shade is, of course, a stunning citrus hue, the colour of the Cancer Council daffodil.

As seen on red carpets throughout this year’s award season already, yellow is expected to be joined by other bright colours of the rainbow, alongside embellished and embroidered designs.

In an ode to the Top End, Kevin is predicting tropical prints will be a hit too.

The Paspaley Star Ball, in aid of the Starlight Children’s Foundation, falls on May 19 this year and, as the name would suggest, it is set to be a sparkly affair on our calendars.

Love Thy Label, a hire and preloved store in the Darwin CBD, is readying itself for a bumper event season.

Reflective of the magnitude of events now populating our diaries, Love Thy Label has included an ever-growing list of occasions on its website, as it curates our wardrobes at the same time.

The traditional floor-length gown still reigns supreme, but has enjoyed a freshen-up with changed neck and collar lines, sheer cut-outs, sleeve details and differing hem lines — often a slightly shortened hem at the front of the dress, and longer behind.

Socialites are also embracing mixing textures of fabric, along with additions including hair jewels, delicate headbands, velvet ribbons and soft hair braids. And never underestimate accessories.
