Walkers soldier on to beat the heat for charity
HUNDREDS of walkers braved the heat – and blisters – yesterday to raise awareness of depression and PTSD.
The participants in Darwin’s Walking off the War Within fundraiser raised money for the Soldier On foundation by donning heavy backpacks and walking laps of Lake Alexander, symbolising the weight of depression and trauma that many carry around daily.
Similar events were held in Alice Springs, Yulara and elsewhere around the country.
Sarah Fowler, of Bellamack, walked the full 20km with three mates, and said she hopes the event will become an annual fixture. “Not only am I aiming to take part again next year but I’m aiming to have ten people in our group,” she said.
Ms Fowler, who works with adopted children, said she often comes across suicides or attempted suicides through her work.
“The whole point of the walk is raising awareness of depression and suicide,” she said.
Among the walkers were large contingents from the armed forces and emergency services, where the strains of the job leave many battling inner demons.
