EVERYTHING’S GONNA BE ALL WHITE As Darwin’s first Diner en Blanc fast approaches, it’s time to flush out the wadrobes for that eternal shade of pale

-

DINERS will be painting the town white on Saturday May 6 when the maiden Darwin chapter of Diner en Blanc touches down in the Top End. Translating to ‘dinner in white’, the unconventional picnic event started in Paris in 1988 and sees guests invited to dress formally in all white, and to dine together, at a table they decorate on arrival at a secret open air location.

For the first time, Darwin is joining the hundreds of cities across the world who host the special soiree.

The ticketed event will see people meet at central locations across Darwin and then be bussed to the surprise venue for the event.

Guests bring their own food, tables, chairs, tablecloths and adornments (including cutlery and chandeliers).

For those of us too busy deciding what to wear and how to dress their table, there is gourmet catering available to order (preevent).

The dress code (all white, not ivory, not cream, not off-white) is strictly enforced and diners are encouraged to embrace texture and mix different fabric types, such as leather, lace and feathers as part of their outfit for the evening.

Shoes, handbags and accessories like jewellery should follow the white code too — the exception being a touch of metal on a headpiece or belt, for example. Boys, this goes for you too. The new Attitude for Men superstore in the CBD is a good start for a fresh look.

Territory favourite footwear thongs are a no go, but organisers have selected a surprise location that has solid footing, is safe and well lit, so in other words, if you find some white heels, wear them.

Stomp Shoes and Me & My Llama are a good place to start for a new pair.

Darwin designers and retailers are embracing the new event on our calendar.

Jasmine Wallis has created a special range under her Wallis & Jazz label for the occasion, and stores including Splash, Just Looking Boutique, Bread and Lulu & Daw have new stock in too.

Local milliners, including Ally Pettifor’s Alea Headwear and Maria Koko have crafted some special knockout white pieces too.

WHAT if I told you your pillow case could guarantee you clearer skin, stronger hair and even help your skin with anti-ageing? Is this just another fad or will it actually make a difference?

Here are the facts:

Cotton pillowcases create creases on your skin and absorb your night creams, contributing to dryness and skin ageing, while a silk pillowcase has a tighter thread count, which means it won’t absorb your products and is smoother on your skin.

Cotton pillowcases have a high surface tension, meaning it can grab your hair and lead to breakage even hair loss. A silk pillowcase is softer on your hair and is even recommended to women who have hair extensions for that reason.

Women or men who suffer from acne, rosacea or other skin conditions can benefit from a silk pillowcase as it won’t hold dirt and doesn’t rub your skin like a cotton pillowcase will.

In Darwin, silk pillow cases are even more useful as they hold coolness for longer and make for a more comfortable and luxurious sleep. The same can be said for silk sheets and pyjamas.

Try it yourself and enjoy life with a crease - ree face. 100% Mulberry silk available at Sekada homewares 132 smith street Darwin.
