GET OUT (MA15+) The best horror movie of the year, this revolves around Chris, a young African-American photographer who has been invited by his white girlfriend to meet her parents. Despite being gracious hosts from a well-regarded family, Chris is unable to shake off the feeling something is not quite right. He’s not wrong. A DOG’S PURPOSE (PG) A story about the reincarnation of a dog who takes on several different forms, from red retriever to German shepherd. If you will happily howl away at the sight of a cute canine carking it, this is for you. But if you’ve built up a resistance to one of the most manipulative pathos powerplays in the movie business, give it a miss. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2 (M) Not as good as the original, which was a tough act to follow, but there is plenty of irresistable escapism on offer here — although things can coast along on cruise control a bit too often. The story centres on unmasking the true parentage of Guardians spearhead Peter Quill. THEIR FINEST (M) A sincerely endearing tale of quiet achievement set in WWII London. Catrin is an inexperienced advertising copywriter who moves to the capital and ends up working on a big picture movie aimed at boosting civilian morale. Set in a time when discrimination faced working women, this combines just the right amount of drama, comedy and romance. GOING IN STYLE (M) A genial yet somewhat generic comedy about three old timers who plan to rob a bank to pay the bills after their pensions are cut. This could have fallen flat on its face, but its saving grace is the performances put in by the superb Michael Cain, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin. THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS (M) The best action sequences in The Fate of the Furious keep switching from incredible to insane with ridiculous ease. A key part of the juiced-up joy that comes from experiencing The Fate of the Furious is processing the implausible scope of its highly kinetic action scenes on your own. However, mention must be made of the new peaks of craziness scaled by the finale.
