Woolly thinking frustrates shoppers

- LAUREN ROBERTS

BIG southern chain stores aren’t catering for the tropical Darwin climate, sending woolly winter jumpers, scarfs, beanies and coats up to the NT.

Darwin shoppers have little use for the warm clothes, with the Dry in full swing and a max of 31C predicted for the foreseeable future.

Born-and-bred Darwinite Danica Walker said it was difficult to find suitable clothing in most major chain stores.

“It’s a struggle to find good basics at the moment,” she said. “There’s just jumpers and it’s not even cold enough to wear them at night.

“I find the boutique stores are the ones that cater properly (for the NT climate).”

Splash On Knuckey owner Lisa Richards said she rarely stocked winter garments — choosing to order mostly spring and summer clothing lines for her CBD store.

Ms Richards said it was “crazy” to think major chain stores were sending truckloads of winter stock up to Darwin — which had a climate better suited to cotton dresses, bathers, and shorts. “I think chain stores should be producing a range for the tropics,” she said.

“A lot of local shops cater to the climate.”

Retail experts have previously said winter clothes were sold in the Territory because “consumers travel to southern states or overseas where it’s cooler”.
