Pair reveal Lambie sex shop spree

- SUNDAY JUNE 4 2017 LAUREN ROBERTS ANNIKA SMETHURST

WHEN Grant Jacobsen went to Bali on a boy’s trip earlier this year, he came back with a special gift for fiancee Tania Manning.

“I had a couple of suits made, and as a surprise I made a matching one for her,” he said.

Ms Manning said she was horrified by the gift, but it certainly wowed the judges at yesterday’s Adelaide River Races.

The quirky pai pair won b best td dressed couple at the annual event.

“You just can’t take him anywhere,” Ms Manning said.

“He loves to have a laugh and a good time and it’s contagious.

“We’re getting married next year in April – I’m petrified of what he’s going to turn up in.”

It’s not the first time the couple have rocked a matching ensemble, and according to Mr Jacobsen it won’t be the last.

“I actually picked out two patterns, one for the (Adelaide River) Races and one for the Darwin Cup,” he said.

The couple agree it’s not just the racing they love about the annual event, it's the atmosphere.

“I like to meet new people,” Mr Jacobsen said.

“Truth be told, I actually hate horses – I come for the party.”

Adelaide River Show Society secretary Naomi Blewit said the River Races had hd a cou country feel many people loved.

“People dress up for the day then go back to their tent, jump into a pair of jeans and a shirt ready to party for the night,” she said.

“You need two sets of clothes to go to our races.”

Punters spent the day betting on local and interstate meetings and quenching their thirst at the bar, with a large number opting to camp out under the stars. SENATOR Jacqui Lambie took staff shopping for “sex toys” at adult stores, complained about needing “a root”, and stumbled over words of more than two syllables when giving speeches, according to disgruntled staff.

The accusations are among a litany of complaints aimed at the Tasmanian crossbench senator by former chief of staff Rob Messenger and his wife Fern, who was Senator Lambie’s office manager until what was a dramatic split earlier this year.

A letter of complaint from the couple alleges that Ms Lambie’s staff were “walking on egg shells” due to her “unpredictable” behaviour and “angry mood swings”.

Mr Messenger accuses Ms Lambie of using vulgar and obscene language in the office, describing anyone she disagreed with her as a “c***-arse”, and giving orders to staff “while under the influence of alcohol”.

He wrote: “You see nothing wrong with ... regularly announcing to staff members – including a young male — that you ‘haven’t got laid in a long time’ and you desperately ‘need a root’.”

Following a highly publicised radio interview in 2014 when Ms Lambie said she was looking for a rich man with a “package between their legs”, Mr Messenger said staff were forced to field an “extraordinary number of abusive phone calls”.

When contacted, Senator Lambie said; “because of privacy legislation I am unable to comment about former staff members”.

It is understood the bitter spat erupted after the election, prompting the Messengers to make an official complaint to the Commonwealth under Public Interest Disclosure (PID) laws.

Ms Lambie fired back, issuing a legal “show cause” notice to the pair over claims Mr Messenger used a private email address for work.

Rob and Fern Messenger did not return calls or emails.
