Target drunk revellers

- GARY SHIPWAY

EXTRA patrols targeting speeding and drink drivers will be out in force today and tomorrow, police have warned.

With thousands of people expected to flock to the Greek Glenti on the Darwin Esplanade and thousands more heading out to bush events around the Territory, the Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend is going to be a busy one for police.

Duty superintendent Chris Board warned drivers against making the foolish decision to drink and drive.

“It is going to be a hectic time on the roads and we know a lot of people will be taking the opportunity to enjoy themselves at all the social events,” Supt Broad said.

“But the warning is clear, ‘Do not drink and drive’.

“We will have extra police out to catch those who want to make the wrong choice and put others at risk by getting behind the wheel of their car and driving with too much alcohol under their belt.

“Make no mistake about it there will be plenty of random breathalysers on the road. If you are going to drink make sure you get alternative transport home.”

Supt Broad also urged drivers to have patience on the road this weekend.

“Particularly in and around large crowd events,” he said. “Expect some hold ups and don’t be in a hurry.

“The same applies if you are out on our highways or bush roads.

“Our speed units will also be out. It is also important to be aware of driver fatigue.

“Fatigue has a huge impact on your driving and can affect your ability to drive safely, similar to the effect of drinkdriving

“This is a likely factor in almost one third of single-vehicle crashes in rural areas and is suspected to be a primary cause in more than 20 per cent of road fatalities.”

Statistics show about 50 Territorians are killed annually on the roads and more than 500 are seriously injured.

To stem the carnage, the Territory Government is looking for ideas to bring down the road toll and is hoping a new discussion paper will help.

Territorians are being reminded they can help by taking part in an online Towards Zero survey as part of the initiative.

Community forums are also being held across the Territory to examine the causes of significant road trauma in the NT, and discuss strategies to prevent it.

The closing date for feedback is June 30.

The Territory road toll stands at 12 compared to 18 for the same time last year.
