Holidays change for NT students

- JUDITH AISTHORPE

THE month-long Dry Season school holidays will become a thing of the past as the NT Department of Education moves to change the holiday periods.

From next year students will be given one week between terms 1 and 2, three weeks between terms 2 and 3 and two weeks between terms 3 and 4.

Previously there were oneweek breaks between terms except for the month-long holiday between terms 2 and 3.

An education department spokeswoman said the decision to change the school term dates was a result of feedback from three rounds of consultation in 2015 and 2016.

“The comprehensive consultation process was undertaken to ensure that final decision was well informed by the community and provides the best possible educational outcomes for Northern Territory students,” she said.

The spokeswoman said the change reflected research which ind indicated school attendance a and participation in learn learning was generally at its highest point at the sta start of the school year.

Gunbalanya and Lajam jamanu Schools will continu tinue to operate under their individual school calenda endars, to suit the context of their com communities.
