Teens dealing with cancer connect at camp

- JUDITH AISTHORPE

YOUNG people dealing with cancer will get some respite and meet others in a similar situation at a CanTeen camp this week.

Siblings Darcy Sach, 13, and Macenzie, 16, and Ashley Birkin, 14, will head to Batchelor tomorrow for a four-day camp.

Macenzie, who has been cancer-free from bone cancer for three years said the camp would be a great way to meet other young people in a similar situation.

“It makes you feel less isolated, you can talk to people who have been through similar things and you can relate to them,” she said.

Ashley, whose younger sister is in remission, said he was hoping to do something outside of his comfort zone.

“You get to have new experiences and make friends,” he said.

About 140 young Territorians (aged 12-25) are affected by cancer each year. The 15 camp members will rock climb and snorkel at Florence Falls among other activities.
