A taste of UK summer
WHAT is a perfect Dry Season day in the Top End is apparently equivalent to hell for people in the UK.
A heatwave has swept parts of western Europe, with the UK experiencing 34C on Wednesday – the UK’s hottest June day since 1976.
In total the UK had five consecutive days above 30C.
Meanwhile Darwin had a high of 31.3C yesterday, and that is a good Dry Season day.
Backpackers Ben Joseph, 27, of England and Rory Anderson, 24, of Scotland were relishing our warm weather at their accommodation on Mitchell Street.
They both agreed Sydney, and even Katherine, at night, had been cold.
“My mum and dad, they rang me and said it’s really hot here (in England) and they had to wear T-shirts,” Mr Joseph said. He said his parents were even forced to put on sunscreen.
Mr Anderson said it was normal in Scotland to think a warm day was 15C.
“Everyone will have their tops off when it reaches 15C,” he said.
Mr Anderson said he thought most of Australia would be as good as Darwin weather-wise but was surprised to find out southern parts got cold.
Meanwhile, boys at a British high school sweating it out found a novel way around strict uniform rules banning shorts. The teens donned skirts instead of the officially mandated grey slacks.
