FLYING HIGH

Living in the NT can mean jumping on a plane fairly often. Your skin and lips don’t have to suffer

- EMMA CRILLY

Thanks to strict weight limits it can be tricky choosing makeup and haircare products to take on holiday — it’s hard to find items that won’t take up too much room. Less is definitely more when it comes to packing — and means more room for new purchases.

I never apply makeup before flying long distance. During a long-haul flight it just dries your skin out, leaving an overall look of ‘crispy’ skin.

Most skincare companies now manufacture travel-size products you can take in your hand luggage on an aeroplane — all fluids need to be 100ml or less in size when included in your carry-on bag.

Ultraceuticals, available at Chaba Beauty and Spa on Smith Street, has launched its travel-size skincare sets so you don’t have to pack your full-sized products.

You can choose what pack will suit you best — they have normal to dry sets, or normal to oily — for $95.

If you can’t find travel-size products you can always decant your regular brands into clear, recyclable 100ml bottles.

I usually pick them up from Bardens pharmacy on Smith Street.

My biggest tip for long-haul flying is hydralytes. During a flight the aircon and lack of fresh air will dehydrate your skin and body no end. It leaves you feeling awful. Hydralytes help me feel somewhat human when I get off. Another quick fix to keep your skin hydrated on board is Mac Prep + Prime Fix + ($32). This multi-use spray is like a drink for your complexion. You can mix it with your foundation or simply spray on your face to stop your skin getting thirsty. You can buy a travel-size from Mac online for $18. I used this nearly every hour during a 10-hour flight recently. Like your skin, your lips will feel really dry when flying. I use The Body Shop Lip Butter. It contains virgin coconut oil and vitamin E, and will be your saviour.
