Debut smashing hit as Banthorpe smacks ton

- JOSH SPASARO

PINT’S tall and feared pace attack tried to bounce him out, but that didn't work.

When they pitched it up, he drove them with authority.

Liam Banthorpe was all class for Tracy Village in the Round 10 Margaret Coady Cup clash at Marrara yesterday, making 113 from 123 deliveries on debut in the Darwin Premier Grade.

The Victorian – who has past experience with the Australian under-19 team – helped his team to 266 all-out.

He hit 13 fours and three sixes and the only chance he gave was the drive he hit in the air to PINT captain Marc Calkin off Pat Gallow.

When towering pacemen Gallow and Matt Bacon tried to bounce out Banthorpe, he pulled astutely in front of square.

And when they pitched it up, Banthorpe’s drives were all class.

The 20-year-old scored runs all over the park and looked settled from early in his innings.

PINT is 0-8 in reply, with openers Joshua Neill and Simon Lavers at the crease.

Gallow finished with 4-57 from his 17 overs.

Meanwhile, Darwin batsman Jacob Dickman carried his dynamic Strike League form into the two-day format, cracking 45 runs from 39 balls in his team’s total of 283 all-out against Palmerston.

Dickman hit nine fours and a six on day one of the clash at Cazalys Oval.

Tail-enders Luke Zanchetta (41 off 38) and Aaron Summers (48 off 25) produced some lusty late blows to help the reigning premiers reach their competitive total.

Express paceman Summers was fresh off the plane from the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, where his bowling was closely observed by Australian Test legend Ryan Harris.

He smashed six sixes.

Palmerston is 1-55 in reply, Shane Buttfield toughing out 74 balls to be 27 not-out.

And the last-placed Nightcliff are set to record a muchneeded win against Southern Districts at Fred’s Pass. The hosts were bowled out for 147, with all-rounder and opening quick Reuben Wakefield taking 4-56.

Youngster Daniel Mylius topscored at opener for Districts with 31.

Nightcliff are 4-130 in reply, with captain Udara Weerasinghe and Nicholas Cowling both unbeaten on 20.
