Feeny stars in Sharks stunner

- JACK HISLOP

THE Northern Sharks moved into third position on the NRL NT ladder after they beat Litchfield 30-14 at Goodline Park last night.

Anthony Castro’s men entered the clash in fourth place, two points behind the Bears, but showed glimpses of their 2016 premiership form to move ahead on for and against.

The first half was the Keanu Feeny show. Playing on the right edge, his speed and agility caused the Bears all sorts of problems. He sliced through the line individually for each of his three tries.

Another to Reuben Castro put the reigning premiers 22-0 up at the break.

Halfback Matt Goodfellow showed glimpses of breaking through the Sharks in the first 40 but with his forwards unable to force their way over the advantage line, he was shut down.

The first 15 minutes of the second half remained scoreless, until a string of penalties catapulted Litchfield inside the Sharks’ red zone. After a good start to the set, with direct runners hitting the line hard, Goodfellow darted his way across the stripe on the back of a quick play the ball.

Only minutes later and Goodfellow would go over again. With the Sharks unable to deal with a torpedo bomb from the halfback, he saw a gap

and pounced in the corresponding set to cut the margin to two converted tries with a quarter of the game to play.

The Bears’ hard work to get back into the game came undone straight from the kick-off.

They dropped the ball from the first hit-up and Joey Webster crossed the stripe two tackles later. Aaron Barnes responded for Litchfield, before Webster crossed again to seal the match.

A melee just before the sideline saw the Sharks’ Robert Teameamea and Karl Hart sin-binned and Litchfield’s Chainey Jones sent off.

In other results, Palmerston beat Katherine 48-22, after Katherine got within four points of last year’s grand finalists with 25 minutes to go.

The Raiders were led by Matthew Johnson, who bagged a hat-trick, with Lachlan Bryan crossing for a brace.

The Chico Motlop Shield was won by Nightcliff 66-4, with Dragons five-eighth Brad Sneddon winning the Chico Motlop Medal for best on ground.
