Miracle Babies Foundation helping our most vulnerable
THERE were times when Fiona and Peter Mousellis didn’t think they would bring their newborn home.
Little Despina was born 24 weeks early and spent her first six months of life in hospital.
“It had a huge impact – emotionally, family-wise – your whole world is upside down,” Ms Mousellis said.
“You don’t wish it upon anyone – it’s horrible.”
Despina was one of about 27,000 babies born premature every year. About 1000 of those newborns don’t ever make it home.
Ms Mousellis said one of the challenges for the family was the twice-daily trip back and forth to the hospital with her son Yiannis, now 7.
“It was difficult for him because he would see her in hospital and he would tell her about his day, not understanding she might not come home,” Ms Mousellis said.
After six months of trying to lead a normal life for Yiannis, the Mousellis family were fi- nally able to bring Despina home.
“Having such a sick baby and then being able to bring her home was amazing,” Ms Mousellis said. “This was the best gift anyone could ask for.
“She’s absolutely fantastic – she’s so much fun and brings so much love and so much joy to everyone.
Ms Mousellis said one of the things that helped the family through such a difficult time was the support of Miracle Babies Foundation’s NurtureGroup.
“The support you have from the groups up here was amazing,” she said.
“There was always someone there if you’ve got any ques- tions at any time, whether it was the weekend or the middle of the night.”
Miracle Babies Foundation general manager Kylie Pussell said it was important for parents to use available support.
“Be kind to yourself and use the support networks around you,” she said.
“Talk to the nurses, doctors, friends and family, and let them help.”
Darwin NurtureGroup is held fortnightly on Thursdays from 9.30-11am at C3 Church in Malak.
