VANESSA CLOUGH, 31 LUIS FLOECK, 29 Luis first caught Vanessa’s eye at the Darwin Ski Club, at a Butterfly Effect concert in 2010, where they met through their mutual friend Craig. “Luis was wearing a bright red shirt at a rock concert, so we didn’t lose him, that’s for sure,” she said. The pair soon fell for each other and on a short holiday to Brisbane in February 2017, Luis popped the question. “We were in our hotel room getting ready to go for dinner and Luis knows I hate attention, so he wanted to do it before we went out in public,” Vanessa said. She said she cherished every day with Luis, but one of their highlights together was climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge for their anniversary three years ago. After a short engagement the pair married in an intimate ceremony with their closest friends and family in June at the Darwin Botanic Gardens. But it was not without a few funny hiccups. “Luis misspoke several times during our ceremony and answered ‘yes’ to everything instead of ‘I do’,” Vanessa said. “Then, after our photographs at Vestey’s Beach, our groomsman Craig’s car broke down (overheated) and he was an hour late to the reception.” Vanessa was just happy not to fall off Luis’s dirt bike during the photos. Surrounded by friends and family at the reception the pair opted out of a traditional first dance. “Neither of us had any interest in embarrassing ourselves,” Vanessa said. The newlyweds are saving their pennies for a belated honeymoon in Italy next year, where they are heading for Vanessa’s brother’s wedding.
