Supercars salute past in retro twist

-

IT IS always 1970 as far as Dave Reynolds is concerned.

“I would have fit right in back then,” Reynolds said.

“It seemed a bit more relaxed and people said what they thought. That would have suited me.

“I certainly grew up in the wrong era. I am not really suited to political correctness.’’

The entire Supercars field will join the Erebus funny man in turning back time this week with Supercars to celebrate the sport’s proud history with “Retro Round” at the Sandown 500, beginning on Friday.

Each team will pay tribute to the heroes of yesteryear with one-off retro-themed liveries to be unleashed on the historic track.

And drivers like Reynolds will go the extra mile by dressing for the part.

“I don’t quite have enough hair to grow a mullet but I can certainly put a wig on,” Reynolds said.

“I am having a look around to see what I can come up with to wear next weekend.”

Brad Jones Racing are paying tribute to Norm Beechy with the team’s three-car attack to wear the two-time champion’s paint.

Tim Slade will lead the charge with a Shell-coloured livery based on Beechy’s title-winning Holden Monaro of 1970.
