HOLIDAY AT HOME Tropical fashion can make one look like they’ve taken an island getaway

- GEORGINA MURPHY FASHION

LOOKING for a holiday but all out of leave? Keen for a beach day but can’t get near the sand? There’s no need to mentally start writing postcards and planning your holiday snaps for Instagram — boho-inspired fashion can bring your holiday to you. Previously the pick for festivals and beach bar frivolity, bohemian flavoured fashion has gone more mainstream than rhapsody with what one local boutique owner describes as “enduring popularity”.

Wrap dresses, floral prints and soft fabrics join flowing sleeves and elasticated waists as the go-to for everything from coffee dates to the dance floor.

Emily Hardy, co-owner of lifestyle boutique Lulu & Daw in Darwin said she her and business partner Suse Forrest have noticed consumers are becoming more aware of the effects on fast fashion and the environment and are looking to buy quality pieces that’ll last and can be worn more than once.

“With that shift, we’ve seen bohochic brands branch out and become slightly less boho and a little more chic, making them more versatile,” Emily said.

“You can now purchase boho-chic inspired pieces that you could wear with bare feet, dressy sandals or even boots, whether it’s to the beach, out to dinner or even to a wedding.

“That is why we’ve aligned ourselves with Auguste the Label, our boho inspired brand.”

Emily pointed to Darwin’s own Embella, who this month celebrates five years in business.

The local label owned by Sally RogersWillsher embodies the cool and relaxed vibe of a beachside life with her shopfront in Darwin, market stalls and online presence.

Just perusing the social media platforms of Embella, short for ‘embellish,’ you’d be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a travel blog, with beautiful beach images, salty hairstyles and flowing, floaty, floral printed clothing.

Perhaps that’s the alluring aspect of boho-flavoured fashion; it makes the wearer feel like they’re on a tropical holiday, or at the very least, they’ve dressed for one and could slip into holiday mode very quickly.
