TODDLER POOL FOR PARAP

- GARY SHIPWAY

TERRITORY Chief Minister Michael Gunner will meet with Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis to progress redevelopment of the Parap Swimming Pool to include the addition of a pool for toddlers.

Mr Gunner wrote to Cr Vatskalis on Friday proposing the addition of a toddlers’ pool and the creation of an early childhood precinct along Ross Smith Ave.

“I am eager to commence discussions at an opportune time and would consider adding the stage 2 redevelopment to the Northern Australian Capital Cities Committee agenda,” he wrote.

“Elements of the redevelopment could include the toddler pool in the new Parap pool facility and new facilities for Parap Family Centre and the Parap Preschool.

“The toddler pool was a much loved feature of the old pool and including the pool as part of the stage 2 redevelopment would enhance familyfriendly activities for the local area.

“Furthermore, Parap Preschool on Ross Smith Ave and the Parap Family Centre on Charlotte St are ageing government and council facilities that are in need of investment and upgrade. I would like to commence discussions about the possibility of upgrading and allocating Parap Preschool with Parap Family Centre, utilising existing council land along Ross Smith Ave.”

Cr Vatskalis said he had talked to the Chief Minister, liked what he was proposing, and was keen to get the discussions moving as soon as possible.

“I am very excited to hear that the Government wants to sit down with us to discuss the addition of a pool for toddlers,” he said.

“The previous council didn’t include it because they didn’t have the money.

“It just doesn’t make sense not to have a pool for young children.

“In terms of the Parap Preschool with Parap Family Centre, this is something council and government should be working on together.”
