Jono making waves down south on Today

- JUDITH AISTHORPE

DARWIN’S favourite TV news reader Jonathan Uptin has had the break of his career after sitting in as host of the Weekend Today show.

The regional Nine News newsreader was on national telly yesterday morning and will be again today.

His first time in the big seat, Uptin rubbed shoulders with Victoria Secret model Georgia Fowler.

While some may baulk at having to get up at 4am, he said he was over the moon to be given such an opportunity.

“I didn’t sleep a wink last night,” he said. “There were nerves, excitement and paranoia of sleeping through the alarms.”

Since moving to Brisbane Uptin has had the oppor- tunity to read the news for Brisbane on several occasions.

“It’s been really overwhelming I’m just really stoked with how it’s going.

“I totally didn’t expect it when they closed the Darwin studios. I thought my career would have been based in Brisbane doing the regional news.”

He said while filling in on the Weekend Today show he would be showing off the Territory with every chance he got.

“What I enjoyed was dropping a few Darwin comments, we’re so often looked over on the national stage,” he said.

Uptin was filling in for Tom Steinfort, who was away on assignment.

You can catch Uptin on Nine’s Weekend Today show from 7am.
