Note my very high score. That’s because this simple burger joint really rocks it. It’s not fancy, glamorous or fine dining. It’s GOOD, thanks. Darwin born brothers Alex and Eddie James left town and finished schooling in Adelaide. They travelled a bit, did a lot of work in bars, bistros and cafes around the globe then came to their collective senses and moved back to Darwin. Nearly three years in the planning with mates in the know, the brothers’ opened the doors a month or so ago.

“We’ve always retained ties to this town, with half our immediate family residing here long-term. We’re passionate about this city, and are thrilled to be part of it’s coming of age,” said Alex. “Small, eclectic venues are the key to a vibrant, diverse city and the Knuckey /Cavenagh venues are leading the charge.

“There’s a lot of room for Darwin to grow and progress, and thankfully there’s a handful of business owners who are taking it upon themselves to be the catalyst. People either talk, or walk, and the CBD would be a much better place if people tried to be the change they’d like to see, as opposed to tearing down those who are walking it (or limping in our case!)” This brave, brazen and fearless duo have got the combo of good food, welcoming ambience and delightfully friendly staff sorted.

You are welcome to pop in for a quick bevvie, or linger longer and sample some of the best burgers and snacks in town. I managed to swing past on three occasions recently and from that I base my score. Each time has been fun, relaxed, welcoming and delicious. If its busy, wait or come back. It will be worth it.

On one visit, I was joined by a friend who needs a GF diet. Smart lad brought his own burger buns just in case. The crew were happy to oblige and made no bother.

I went for the Hot Bird Burger, as I am a self-confessed chilli addict seeking spicy perfection. I was not disappointed, as I am often. There was a good hit of spice in the aioli, tender confit chicken pieces, salty crispy bacon and Swiss cheese. All of my favourite food groups between delicious buns! Ticked all the boxes. The other top preferred has to be the Servo Burger. Coming from the memories of the iconic Aussie handful of goodness. Beef patty, cheddar, cooked onions, greens, grilled tomato, relish and don’t forget the beetroot! I will be back to try about-to-be favourites like the Bad Burger, The Good Burger and the Cornflake Chicken. Then I can start back again on the Hot Bird. The cycle of a perfect life really. They do an excellent job on the wings as a side. Crispy fried with selection of sauces. Dribbling goodness on a plate.

Get in on a quiet night, enjoy some craft beer, or an excellent glass of wine and one of the best burgers in town. And don’t forget to thank Alex and Eddie for returning home.
