Territory’s Mauboy eyes ARIA live prize

- KATHY McCABE

TERRITORY starlet Jessica Mauboy has her eyes on one prize at the 2017 ARIA awards – the Best Australian Live Act.

Nominated for six awards, including her sixth consecutive tilt at Best Female Artist, the Fallin’ pop superstar has landed in the company of Nick Cave, Peking Duk, Flume and more for the publicly voted trophy after her first headlining tour this year.

The Secret Daughter actor took a massive gamble on the All The Hits tour, stepping up to arenas and investing her own savings to create a concert that would match those of international pop stars.

“There was a moment when I got scared s***less; I don’t have that kind of money, so I invested everything I made from some corporate gigs, all my savings,” she said.

“I lost a bit but I put in the work and it was a triumph because it wasn’t just about me, it was about this beautiful community of fans.”

The success of her latest hit Fallin’, which is up for Song and Video of the Year, helped propel the second The Secret Daughter soundtrack into the ARIA and iTunes top 10.

The Seven drama allowed Mauboy to realise her dream to represent her indigenous roots on the small screen for mainstream Australia.

While she is keeping the details of her ARIA performance a surprise, it is believed there will be a special collaboration with another nominated act.

The 2017 ARIA Awards are broadcast on Nine on Tuesday from 7.30pm.
