Darwin man is rowing for a cause

AFTER losing his brother to suicide three years ago, Wanderers Football Club player Brad McCabe has set off on a long journey to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Mr McCabe yesterday started his epic expedition as he rows from Albury in NSW to Goolwa in South Australia along the Murray River.

The 2200km trip is expected to take about 50 days.

Mr McCabe will travel in a 4.8m canoe, carrying his own food, tent and a swag, and is intending to row about 40km each day.

“I’m doing it on the wing and just see how we go,” he told the Border Mail.

“I’ll just row until I feel like I’ve had enough and pull up on the side of the bank and pitch my tent.”

Mr McCabe said it was important to get people talking about mental health.

“That’s the whole thing about it, you get it out there, so people don’t struggle so much,” he said. “Tom kind of hid it, like most people do, I suppose.

“He never talked about it, and once you’d start talking to him, he just shut down and by then it was just way too late.”

Mr McCabe has raised $10,000 for BeyondBlue.
