Providing opportunities

-

IN 1869, Prince Alfred College headmaster Samuel Fiddian announced the College’s first two scholarships to boys who may not otherwise have afforded a Prince’s education.

The College has proudly awarded scholarships ever since. Current headmaster Bradley Fenner said Prince Alfred College is dedicated to offering scholarships to encourage young people with potential to enrol.

“Since the earliest days of Prince Alfred College, we have offered scholarships to assist young men of promise and potential to attend our school. In recent years, with the generous support of individual donors and the Prince Alfred College Foundation, we have been able to expand our scholarship program to support more boys who would not otherwise be able to attend the College,” Mr Fenner said. The scholarship program aims to support young men of good character, who possess a sound work ethic, in making the most of the many opportunities that Prince Alfred College provides. They look for good allrounders, who will perform well academically and who may excel in a co-curricular area, such as sport, music or drama, and who will be exemplary citizens.

“Our experience tells us that scholarship recipients often emerge as leaders, who give back to the community through their service,” Mr Fenner said.

“Some people think only the academically strong boys receive scholarships, but at Prince Alfred College we look for a number of all-round qualities in boys such as the performing arts, visual arts, sport, music, debating, citizenship, leadership and history of community service.

“Boys benefit from scholarships because their particular interests and abilities are recognised and encouraged.’’

Prince Alfred College has a number of different scholarships on offer for 2019 including academic, music, general excellence and boarding.

In addition, the Foundation offers the Geoffrey Bean Boarding Scholarship, Richard Thorne Chess Scholarship, Indigenous Scholarships and the Ken Lord Family Boarding Scholarship.

The Ken Lord Family Boarding Scholarship is a very generous scholarship and is available to a boarder entering Prince Alfred College in Year 8, 10 or 11 and en-

titles the successful applicant to a 75 per cent remission of tuition and boarding fees for up to five years.

Initial preference is given to applicants from the Tibooburra, Wentworth and Broken Hill areas, or where distance is a significant factor in a student’s education.

Ken Lord attended Prince Alfred College as a boarder from 1940 to 1944 and holds the view that he was fortunate to receive the benefit of the opportunities in life provided to him by that education. Ken and his family wish to provide a similar opportunity to boys who would also benefit from an education at Prince Alfred College. Applications for scholarship entry are offered one year in advance. Applications for the 2019 intake are required to be submitted by January 22, 2018.
