’Miracle survival’ in major smash

- PHILLIPPA BUTT

A TEENAGER has undergone emergency surgery after a major crash in Muirhead which left him trapped in the car for almost an hour.

The 18-year-old man was driving along Lee Point Rd in Muirhead about 2.15am yesterday when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

It’s understood the car, a white Mitsubishi 380, was filled with five teenage passengers and one girl may have been sitting on the lap of another passenger.

All occupants of the car, except the driver, were under 18 years old.

St John Ambulance spokesman Craig Garraway said the driver and another passenger were trapped in the car for about an hour.

“The male driver was completely entrapped for about 50 minutes to an hour and he suffered multiple fractures,” he said.

“The paramedic I spoke to (yesterday) morning said he (had) just gone into surgery but he didn’t seem overly worried. ... At the end of the day, from what I can gather, it’s a miracle they survived.”

The teenage driver is expected to recover from surgery.

The group was travelling inbound on Lee Point Rd when the driver lost control, and veered off the opposite side of the road, scraping along trees and hitting another.

It is understood the car may have been speeding before the crash.

Lee Point Rd was closed for several hours while NT Police major crash investigation unit was on scene but was opened again to traffic about 9.30am yesterday.

The car was seized by police and remains in the police compound as the major crash team continues its investigation.

Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The 2018 NT road toll remains at five after the “miracle” survival of the young people in the car.
