Territory rig

GO FOR (GREEN AND) GOLD With the Winter Olympics racing ahead in South Korea, it is the perfect opportunity for the Territory to flex its fashion muscles

-

IT’S OK if you’re not quite co-ordinated enough for the Commonwealth Games, or if you can’t quite spin or slide enough over ice whimsically to make the Winter Olympics team. And if your dancefloor moves are more windmill than graceful breeze, that’s fine.

2018 is the year to indulge your fashion wardrobe with fitness, and for stepping, literally, beyond sportsluxe. And I think the Territory can lead the way.

The Winter Olympics, figure skating movie I Tonya starring Australia’s own Margot Robbie and the Commonwealth Games are bringing us a trifecta of track, ice and field activity.

We like sparkle. Look at the popularity of bejewelled Camilla caftans. The figure skating dance costumes of 80s and 90s as Tonya Harding whirled and twirled in are surely just the next step. The Northern Territory, as home to the infamous, undefeated and world renowned Darwin ice hockey team can champion sports dressing. Seriously.

Territorians are passionate about sport, and we’re the kings and queens of choosing casual over couture.

And our fashion is bold and bright over our southern cousins’ passion for black and muted tones. Look at Raw Cloth, Ooroo and Magpie Goose as a start. Popular, respectful and creative brands who have championed the Northern Territory’s indigenous art centre’s screen prints, employing locals and putting the Territory on the map.

Clearly, we need look no further than the Norwegian Olympic curling team’s uniforms in PyeongChang this week to see colour is cool.

The pants, with almost psychedelic patterns and an eye-catching colour palette, even have their own Facebook fan page. At over 485,000 page likes, they’ve got the Territory population well and truly covered.

As our athletes freeze in South Korea, your medal winning wardrobe could instead be inspired by the (green and) Gold Coast in April. Here’s how to go for gold:

Make a podium stand in gold, silver and bronze jewellery as you embody the medal tally

Wear your blazer with shorts (we’re summer over Winter Olympics in the Top End)

Wrap yourself up in sports style reflective sunglasses
